KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS –

Trent Boult got things started early, knocking Suni Narine’s stumps to take his 30th first over wicket in the IPL, as he got his line right with a swinging full delivery. MI stayed on top with Deepak Chahar picking up a couple of KKR wickets and Ashwani, on his debut, impressing instantaneously, getting KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane with his very first ball. The collapse left KKR reeling to the lowest Power Play score of the season.

ASHWIN KUMARKKR’s nightmare continued to get worse as the dangerous Angkrish Raghuvanshi (26 off 16) was removed by Hardik Pandya, who had placed a fielder in the deep to take the catch off a shorter ball. Desperate to strengthen their batting, KKR brought in Manish Pandey as an impact substitute but it hardly mattered. In this phase, Ashwani stole the show, eliminating key batters with great skills. Before outwitting both Manish Pandey and Andre Russell using short balls, followed by well-directed length deliveries crashing into the stumps, helped him get rid of Rinku Singh caught at deep cover. His dream spell ripped KKR to pieces.

Ramandeep Singh and his two sixes offered a brief resistance, before Mitchell Santner completed the innings with 22 balls left, adding gloss to a deep MI bowling performance.

MUMBAI INDIANS-

RYAN RICKLETONKKR’s new-ball pair of Spencer Johnson and Harshit Rana found prodigious swing and beat the bat repeatedly but could not land an early breakthrough. But Ryan Rickelton broke the shackles, slapping Johnson for a six and a four and then going one better against Rana in the next over, hoisting a six and two boundaries. The only dampener for MI was the two-time IPL winning captain Rohit Sharma as he struggled for fluency before falling for a well-directed short ball from Andre Russell.

Rickelton was in no mood to stretch the chase long. He pounced on Narine with a slog-swept six in the seventh over and then belted two more in the 10th to raise his maiden IPL half-century off only 33 deliveries. Russell hit back to account for Will Jacks but Suryakumar Yadav was already in a hurry; he blasted an unbeaten 27 off nine balls to complete the chase with 7.1 overs remaining.

Brief scores:

Kolkata Knight Riders 116 in 16.2 overs (Angkrish Raghuvanshi 26; Ashwani Kumar 4-24, Deepak Chahar 2-19) lost to Mumbai Indians 121/2 in 12.5 overs (Ryan Rickelton 62*, Suryakumar Yadav 27*; Andre Russell 2-35 ) by 8 wickets.
