ENGLAND-

MARCO JANSENThis demoralizing close in to England’s dismal Champions Trophy journey had its genesis in the first period, when Buttler decided to bat in the hope of replicating what South Africa did to Afghanistan at the venue. However, what followed was disappointing in contrast for his side. Marco Jansen made short work of the trio of Phil Salt, Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett by the seventh over. A stand of 62 between Joe Root and Harry Brook was the best England could manage, and although their decline was quickening by the time Keshav Maharaj ended Brook’s innings, via a brilliant catch by Jansen.

After a good start by Root he was subsequently cleaned up by Wiaan Mulder and Maharaj coaxed a charge down from Liam Livingstone which left him stumped. Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer put together a semblance of a partnership in putting on 42 but that hardly availed as England’s efforts. The latter was dismissed by Mulder and he ended with 3-25 in 7.2 overs as England crumbled in the 39th. Any flicker of hope that Archer ignited with his renaissance spell was brutally extinguished by the South African batters, who finished off the chase with 125 balls remaining.

SOUTH AFRICA-

RASSIE VAN DER DUSSENThe England bowlers were marginally more effective than their batters, finding their range a little better as Jofra Archer struck on both sides of the Power Play. When the 21 year-old southpaw is not clipping towards midwicket, dummying like Ian Bell, in his first opening gig in professional cricket, he rod the ball onto his stumps for a five-ball duck in the third over. Ryan Rickleton was then given a reprieve by Saqib Mahmood but Archer made a mockery of that as he uprooted the stumps at the other end in the ninth over. But England found it hard to penetrate any further as van der Dussen and Klaasen took their side well on course to surpass the modest target ahead of them.

Jos Buttler pressed his buttons, trying everything at this pair. England’s other best bowler, Adil Rashid, tasked with the job to break the partnership skittishly from both ends. Buttler even returned Archer for his eighth over, in only the 21st of the innings. The South African then back foot punched the quick twice to bring up his first 50 for the tournament off 41 deliveries. Van der Dussen moved onto his fifty by middle of the chase. Rashid broke the partnership with the wicket of Klaasen with only six to get, but Miller finished the chase with straight six in the 30th over.

Brief Scores:

England 179 in 38.2 overs (Joe Root 37; Wiaan Mulder 3-25, Marco Jansen 3-39, Keshav Maharaj 2-35) lost to South Africa 181/3 in 29.1 overs (Rassie van der Dussen 72\*, Heinrich Klaasen 64; Jofra Archer 2-55) by 7 wickets.
