SUNRISERS HYDERABAD-

Sunrisers Hyderabad hit the Power Play with authority having breezed through 100 in this phase with double the ease on a couple of occasions last season. Once again today, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were doing their thing after Rajasthan Royals won the toss and decided to bowl. They had begun with a few seasoned heads among their overseas specialists. Fazalhaq Farooqi, maheesh Theekshana and jofra Archer, however, got no mercy whatsoever. All the attempts were bludgeoning a boundary within the Power Play and most everything came off. Sharma now fell, falling over an attempted slapping of a short ball of Theekshana’s to cover but Head continued from where they had left off, as did Ishan Kishan. The flat Hyderabad pitch with score of 94 on it was mind-boggling but this was not surprising, because intent was the only thing that was seen ball after ball.

ISHAN KISHANAs Head raced to his fifty off a mere 21 balls, SRH just seemed to get stronger and stronger. Making his SRH debut, Ishan Kishan, slotted directly into the role of a middle-order enforcer. Head scooted to 67 off 31 before falling trying to hit Tushar Deshpande to mid-off. But Nitish Reddy and Kishan kept hammering away, if at a relatively slow pace. They still cantered at over 10 an over but it paled in comparison to how they had started off. Taking Jofra Archer to the cleaners, with three sixes in an over, Ishan also brought up an explosive half-century in the process. The partnership of 72 with Reddy, off only 29 balls, ended when the right-hander holed out to deep mid-wicket. However, SRH had a tidy base built until the 15th over getting to 208.

They fell a run short of matching their own IPL record of 287 but SRH still had a statement innings of a season in their very first game. Kishan who reached his century in style made a statement of his own. Archer finished with IPL’s most expensive figures giving 76 runs in four overs SRH finished with a flourish. It was also the fourth occasion of SRH surpassing the 250-run mark in IPL history and all of it happened in the last two seasons. It also highlighted a sorry state of their attack that the Royals arrived with no bowler capable of exerting pressure of any kind on the opposition.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS –

Like SRH, Rajasthan also had no option but to attack from ball one, and attack they did. But unlike SRH, their intent had a modicum of despair at the front-end. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag both got out attempting to accelerate the scoring against a nippy Simarjeet Singh in the second over. A little like this Nitish Rana edged to freakish Shami roadmap three down RR-like for latter team by the PowerPlay. But that did not deter the intent of Sanju Samson or Dhruv Jurel. The former played a few impressive strokes through the offside against Shami while Jurel brought out an incredible onslaught while welcoming Pat Cummins into the attack. Cummins completed a final over of the PowerPlay that was taken for 20, with Jurel contributing 19 of those runs, showcasing the timing that he possesses.

DRUV JURELWhat seemed like a fleeing chase took a all of a sudden an upward turn, as the stroke makers kept coming in the middle overs, with both Jurel and Samson. Jurel then raised the stakes, hitting three sixes off Simarjeet which brought up 28-ball fifty for him. A little earlier, Samson had just brought up his hundred off 26 balls. The pair added 111 as things had turned once again and even raised Rajasthan’s hopes a tad through the middle overs. But just as they were preparing to carry it into the end, both fell in rapid succession. Samson top edged a loft off Harshal while Jurel holed out in the deep to further dent the chase.

Rajasthan were already up against it, what with some momentum robbed losing both set batters. But the batters that came next also never took their foot off the accelerator. Rajasthan passed the 200-run mark comfortably thanks to Shubham Dubey and Shimron Hetmyer. They added 80 in a hurry until Hetmyer was out in the final over. As the Net Run-Rate always plays a big hand in qualification bids, while those runs might not have been sufficient for RR to come through today, they’ll be buoyed by the confidence that they will take from the batting performance, if not the bowling — that had let them down.

Brief scores:

Sunrisers Hyderabad286/6 (Ishan Kishan 106\*, Travis Head 67) defeated Rajasthan Royals 242/6 (Dhruv Jurel 70. Sanju Samson 66) by 44 runs.
