Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton’s devastating partnership propelled South Africa to a comprehensive nine-wicket triumph against the West Indies in their T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 encounter on Thursday in Ahmedabad. Pursuing a target of 177, the Proteas applied constant pressure on the West Indian bowling attack, aggressively seeking boundaries throughout their innings. Markram and Rickelton remained not out on 82 and 45 respectively, while Quinton de Kock had established the foundation with a fierce 47 from merely 24 deliveries. This emphatic victory places South Africa within reach of confirming a semifinal berth and simultaneously provides substantial assistance to India’s tournament prospects. WEST INDIES
Three dropped catches occurred during the Powerplay, yet South Africa successfully claimed four dismissals. Kagiso Rabada, without a wicket in his previous three matches, dismissed Hope with a slashing stroke as extra bounce proved decisive. Shimron Hetmyer survived his opening delivery but fell in the same over after mis-timing a pull shot to mid-wicket. Lungi Ngidi then joined the wicket-taking, first removing the fluent Brandon King through sharp bounce from the surface, before forcing Roston Chase to drag the ball onto his stumps.
The West Indies remained committed to aggressive strokeplay, but Sherfane Rutherford mistimed a pull shot off Corbin Bosch following the Powerplay. Rovman Powell departed for a modest score while Matthew Forde, promoted above Romario Shepherd, couldn’t establish dominance as the West Indies collapsed to 83/7. This brought Jason Holder and Shepherd together, and despite their focus on rebuilding, both seized opportunities to attack whenever possible. A crucial dropped catch on the final delivery of the 14th over granted Holder a lifeline, which he exploited effectively as the pair constructed a rapid fifty-run stand.

The West Indies maximized their batting depth, reaching peak momentum during the 18th over when Marco Jansen conceded 23 runs. Although Ngidi executed his slower deliveries masterfully in the 19th over before Bosch delivered precise yorkers in the final over, the West Indies recovered sufficiently to conclude at 176/8. Holder was dismissed via run-out for 49, while Shepherd achieved his maiden T20I half-century with a fortunate boundary from the innings’ final delivery.
SOUTH AFRICA-
As per the match progress, South Africa started their chase with Markram playing beautiful shots with ease regarding his batting form. He hit fours and sixes easily with Quinton de Kock doing the same as they attacked Shamar Joseph in the last Powerplay over, as per which South Africa scored 69 runs in that phase. As per the match situation, the two batsmen kept scoring runs and de Kock hit Gudakesh Motie’s back-of-the-hand bowling very hard. Basically, it was surprising that off-spinner Roston Chase, who was picked for tactical reasons according to captain Hope, bowled to de Kock only in the 8th over.

De Kock actually hit the ball into the crowd over mid-wicket and pulled another one to the boundary. He definitely got out when Jason Holder caught him. Ryan Rickelton came to bat at number 3 position and maintained the scoring rate further. This happened when Markram itself completed a smooth fifty runs. As per the match, West Indies dropped some very difficult catches that came to them, but regarding their bowling, it was not sharp at all. At 109/1 at the halfway point, the chase itself looked nearly finished and further resistance seemed unlikely.
Basically, it was the same story with Rickelton and Markram hitting the bowlers all around and sending balls into the crowd regularly. Holder and Shepherd bowled good yorkers, but this further delayed the result itself for some time only. Rickelton remained not out on 45, while Markram further completed the task itself with a bottom-handed shot over Holder to end West Indies’ winning streak. Basically his 82* got him the Player of the Match award and South Africa moved closer to the same semifinal spot.
Brief scores:
As per the match results, West Indies scored 176/8 in 20 overs with Romario Shepherd making 52 runs and Jason Holder scoring 49, while Lungi Ngidi took 3 wickets for 30 runs and Kagiso Rabada got 2 wickets for 22 runs. Regarding South Africa’s performance, they won by 9 wickets after scoring 177/1 in just 16.1 overs with Aiden Markram hitting 82, Quin
