On Wednesday, KKR defeated RR by 8 wickets in their IPL 2025 encounter as Quinton de Kock scored unbeaten 97. Earlier, Varun Chakaravarthy (2 for 17) and Moeen Ali (2 for 23) made full use of the slowness of the surface at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium as KKR kept RR to 151 for 9 in 20 overs after electing to bowl first. Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana took two scalps each. RR’s highest run-getter was Dhruv Jurel, who scored a 33-run knock in 28 balls. KKR’s chase got off to a slow start but de Kock’s innings always had them ahead in the game. His 97 came in just 61 balls, with 8 fours and 6 sixes. RAJASTHAN ROYALS-

The RR openers began with nine from the first Spencer Johnson over, including a top-edged pull for a four from Yashasvi Jaiswal and a well-placed four behind square on the off side from Sanju Samson. A frugal 5-run over from Vaibhav Arora was then succeeded by 12 runs off Johnson, with Jaiswal hitting his first six, over the leg side. Samson, who had been pinned by Arora in his opening ceremony, looked to change it up in the crease and hit a boundary before being bowled soon after, yorking himself with an errant charge down the track. Even after Riyan Parag hit Harshit Rana for a six in the previous over, Harshit gave away just 7 runs in the fifth over. RR had scored in excess of 50 at the end of six, thanks to a six apiece from Parag and Jaiswal off Arora in the last over of the powerplay.

Scoring two sixes and two fours in the powerplay, Jaiswal had not looked the fluent best — mistimed and not hit the gaps. Parag, though, was scoring far faster and brought up his third six, putting away a short one from Varun. But RR’s stand-in skipper was gone in the very next over, a lofted attempt gone wrong quashed by another high catch held by Quinton de Kock. Moeen was doing a neat job from the other end and it was reward came with Jaiswal offering a catch to long on. Fazalhaq Farooqi’s replacement Wanindu Hasaranga was sent in at six, but the ploy backfired as he became Varun’s second victim. Moeen bowled Rana as he looked to manufacture room, which added to RR’s woes, seeing him finish with figures of 2-23. Dhruv Jurel then got a couple of lucky boundaries off Harshit as RR reached the 100 mark in the 14th over. Super-sub Shubham Dubey perished to Arora after hitting a boundary, leaving RR with tons of work at 110/6 after 15 overs.

Varun completed his spell with the death overs still to come, and gave away only 2 runs off his last over — as he ended up with 2 wickets for 17 runs. In the 17th, Jurel hit two fours off Harshit: 11 runs. But 8 came off the next over, this one from Johnson. Harshit finished off his spell with a great over, taking the wickets of Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer and only 7 were scored in the 19th over, despite Jofra Archer hitting a six. Archer also tore in with a six off Johnson in the last over before being cleaned up by the Australian as RR barely reached 150.

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS –

Having just bowled the costliest IPL over, Archer began with good pace and bounce troubling Moeen in the first over, and giving away just 2 runs. De Kock carteled Maheesh Theekshana for the first four of the innings before choosing to take on Archer, aggressively cutting and pulling the England pacer for a four and a six. The SA then cleared Theekshana for a massive six but only nine came in that over, and another six-run over from Parag, as RR kept KKR in check by not giving them too many breaks. Sandeep Sharma was the third RR bowler, at least to finish with a containing job in the powerplay and with no wicket, having given only 5, as KKR became the first team to finish powerplay with less than 50 runs in this IPL.

Moeen’s Innings (5 from 12) came to an end when he was run out going for a two. Hasaranga was then brought on and de Kock hit a four off him followed by Ajinkya Rahane as KKR crossed the 50-run mark in the eighth over, two more than what RR did. On a wicket that is assisting the slower bowlers, Parag came and bowled a third and maintained to keep it tight. Then, Keerthi burnt a review to go upstairs for an lbw decision for Theekshana before a well-executed pull for a six by Rahane released some of the pressure. Just 34 runs from 5 overs and it was an easy job for KKR. Tushar Deshpande bordered out, and then Theekshana gave away 5 wides, which made it easy for KKR. In the 18th over, de Kock hit Archer for a four and two sixes to set up an emphatic win for his side.
