ROYAL CHALLENGERS BENGALURU –

The big ticket game had a picture perfect start. Phil Salt flashed a gorgeous cover drive on the first ball then the great Trent Boult fought back with an inswinger for the second to ravage the stumps. It was also Virat Kohli’s first six of the tournament, and he welcomed Jasprit Bumrah with it, woosh from a long way back, and a whipped six over midwicket. The RCB star was going great guns in the overs as he hit a barrage of fours off Boult, Deepak Chahar and Will Jacks. Devdutt Padikkal in tow with the intent of throwing his bat around, smashed a pair of successive sixes off Chahar to finish an eventful Power Play with a 20-run over.

VIRAT KOHLIKohli then took the aggression into the middle-overs hammering a Vignesh Puthur slog sweep for a six to bring up a 29-ball fifty. Padikkal’s blazing innings of 37 (22) also ended in the same over as Jacks took a brilliant catch at the long-on fence. The wicket tightened MI’s screw with a couple of quiet overs as the scoring rate had dipped a few less than 10. Mitchell Santner bowled three very good overs in this phase, mixing up his pace extremely cleverly, and conceding 20 runs. But on the other side of the timeout, his fourth over went for a couple of sixes from Patidar and a four from Kohli. Hardik, who took a fifer last time out, on the attack with double-wicket over to prevent the pair from running away with things. He first had Kohli caught at deep square leg by Naman Dhir for 67 (42) and then extinguished Liam Livingstone, caught at short third, for a duck. Both wickets stemmed from Hardik hitting that line outside the off stump.

Patidar dismissed his counterpart at the death. Hardik kept hitting the same track outside off while Patidar, who had got his measure a little earlier, dealt with him with relative freedom. At the receiving end of both was Patidar, who smashed two sixes and a four from Hardik in a 23-run over, though he and Jitesh Sharma, who was also told to throw the bat around, managed with the boundary in one over. The pair still showed Bumrah the respect he might like as they scampered six singles off the 18th, but made up for it when Boult returned. The New Zealander conceded 18 in the 16th and then was also hit for two sixes by Jitesh in the 19th but then was rewarded with Patidar’s wicket for a 32-ball 64 as wicketkeeper Ryan Rickleton outdid himself with a stunning diving catch after he had first covered a lot of ground running towards the fence behind him. Jitesh managed to collect a six off Bumrah’s excellent death over – the 20th - to finish with a stirring cameo of 40* from 19 deliveries.

MUMBAI INDIANS-

It was another horrible season for Rohit Sharma. He waved his bat and he wafted his bat, and there were signs that he might turn the tide with a pull over square leg and a push down the ground, but Yash Dayal ended his visit with a full inswinging delivery that rattled the stumps off an inside edge. Ryan Rickleton was quickly succeeded through a superb review for a leg before appeal in opposition to Josh Hazlewood. Costa brought a well pitched ball and the left-hander had been back on the defensive when he was struck on the back leg, although even Hazlewood was unsure if the ball pitched in line. However, Jitesh, who was standing behind the stumps, ran in and pointed out to Patidar the spot where the ball pitched and persuaded him to take a review. That belief was rewarded with a wicket, as that onfield decision was reversed. An excellent sixth over from the Aussie followed, mixing his lengths beautifully against Suryakumar Yadav, only two runs off the bat.

KRUNAL PANDYARCB lived dangerously by introducing Suyash Sharma to Suryakumar, who is a spin hitter but the leggie won this battle. He avoided Suryakumar’s hitting arc, bowled to his fields and the irregular square dimensions to give away 15 runs in three overs to pull the game away from MI. Jacks and Suryakumar, both, attempted to attack Suyash on the short leg side boundary however the debutant’s pace – hit speeds of upto 104kmph – and lure- outside the off-stump, had both batters beaten repeatedly. Krunal Pandya at the other end went for three fours in his first over but struck back in the second. Krunal unrolled his surprise short ball - at 117kmph – on Jacks, who pulled to find Kohli at deep backward square leg. Suryakumar, who was struggling to get off the blocks, was dropped twice before a third offering from the batter was taken by Livingstone at mid-off. RCB had almost nailed the middle-overs until Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya got together in the middle. Tilak, with confidence after getting a lucky retired out for his struggle in the last game, blasted Suyash before Hardik went berserk against Hazlewood to hit two 6s and two 4s in a 22-run over. Hardik also raided Krunal for two sixes in the next over for 19 runs to pull down the equation to gettable 65 off 30 balls.

MI had turned the tide well and truly in their direction by the time they reached the death overs. But after three overs of complete pulverizing batting came the sort of precision from Bhuvneshwar and Hazlewood which flipped the fixture on its head. Both nailed yorkers and slow ones well, taking out both the set batters and derailing MI at the end. Tilak was the first to nosebum a slower one off Bhuvneshwar to perish for a 29-ball 56 before Hardik pushed a yorker length ball from Hazlewood to Livingstone at deep midwicket. 28 off 12 had come down to 19 off 6 but Patidar had run out of fast bowling options, and was forced to resort to Krunal. The seasoned spinner dismissed Mitchell Santner and Deepak Chahar — off a brilliant combined catch at the boundary line by Salt and Tim David. Krunal then finished things off with another wicket – his best returns in the IPL – off the final ball with MI 12 short.
