LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS-

LSG had a got off to a bad start when the in-from Mitchell Marsh departed for a golden duck, offering a leading edge to tuck an Arshdeep delivery to the leg side. Just three ran in the first over and Lockie Ferguson, who came on for Azmatullah Omarzai, backed it up with a tight over, conceding only four. Markram set the tone for LSG with three fours off Arshdeep in the third over, and he also took on Ferguson, sending him for a four and a six. But the Kiwi bowler struck back, having the South African batter inside-edge on to the stumps. LSG suffered another blow in the next when Rishabh Pant mistimed a short ball from Glenn Maxwell straight to short fine leg and a silent over from Marco Jansen concluded a potent powerplay for PBKS.

ARSHDEEP SINGHAyush Badoni had a slow start despite top-edging a six off Jansen but Nicholas Pooran ensured a steady flow of runs for LSG as he kept finding the fence at regular intervals. Pooran played to his reputation as a decent hitter of spin, attacking Maxwell and Yuzvendra Chahal. He even hit Marcus Stoinis for a four and a six, reaching the half-century stand along the way. Pooran had looked good value for his fifth consecutive IPL fifty but fell six short, lured into a lofted shot by Chahal to be caught at long off. On the other hand, Badoni, who was on 16 off 19, then broke free and even slashed a brilliant cover drive off Ferguson for a six. David Miller started off slow, before scoring boundaries off Chahal and Maxwell, as LSG got back on the road.

Jansen struck to get rid of Miller, who tried to drive at a delivery with considerable extra bounce, edging to the ‘keeper. Abdul Samad started his innings with a six off the very first ball he faced and Badoni also hit a maximum, off Chahal. The impetus LSG were seeking arrived in the 18th over in which Arshdeep was hit for 20. In that over, there were three fours and a six; including a devious scoop shot from Samad. But PBKS finished on a high as Jansen bowled a tight 19th over, conceding only 8 runs and Arshdeep made a strong comeback in the final over, getting the scalp of Badoni and Samad to restrict LSG under 175.

PUNJAB KINGS-

PRABHSIMRAN SINGHPrabhsimran started well for PBKS, with two fours and a six inside of the first two overs. Priyansh Arya sent a short ball from Digvesh Rathi to the boundary and was then dropped by Marsh at slip. Arya top-edged a pull next to go after and in the same over to depart, a send off from the bowler that reminded one of Kesrick Williams. The wicket did not do much to dent PBKS’s tempo as Prabhsimran carried on dealing with boundaries, as he sent Ravi Bishnoi for two fours and a six, to take the team past the 60-run mark, before the powerplay concluded.

Prabhsimran welcomed left-arm spinner M Siddharth, who came on as an impact sub, into the attack with a switch-hit four. A maximum over cover followed in the same over from Iyer, before Prabhsimran took a single to reach his half-century off 23 balls. He smashed two fours off Bishnoi and one off Siddharth in a boundary blitzkrieg that continued. Not to be outdone, Iyer pulled a short-ball from Shardul Thakur for a six as PBKS had achieved 64 percent of the target in the first segment of the innings. A superb relay effort near the boundary between Badoni and Bishnoi brought Prabhsimran’s entertaining innings to an end, and also gave Rathi his second wicket. PBKS impact sub, Nehal Wadhera, dealt solely in regular boundaries, including two sixes and a four in a Bishnoi over. Iyer, too, played his shots well, belting a four and a six off Avesh Khan, leaving PBKS needing just 17 off 30.

Wadhera hit Thakur for a six to reach his half-century stand, another one to take the equation into single digits. There came a four followed by a dot, before Iyer, on 46, hit the winning six to register his second consecutive fifty. PBKS’ easy win also helped bolster their NRR significantly as they climbed to the second place on the points table.

Brief scores:

Lucknow Super Giants 171/7 in 20 overs (Nicholas Pooran 44, Ayush Badoni 41; Arshdeep Singh 3-43) lost to Punjab Kings 177/2 in 16.2 overs (Prabhsimran Singh 69, Shreyas Iyer 52*, Nehal Wadhera 43*; Digvesh Singh Rathi 2-30) by 8 wickets.
