Although Hardik Pandya made contributions with both bat and ball (5/36 and scoring 28 off 16 balls) and Suryakumar Yadav reached a half-century, MI came up short. LSG’s Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram both scored fifties, leading their team to their second win this season despite their Rs 27 crore captain Rishabh Pant having another disappointing batting performance. LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS:

Mitchell Marsh narrowly avoided being dismissed for a mere 4 runs, as Trent Boult missed out on claiming yet another early wicket. The Mumbai Indians failed to challenge a clear edge, which turned out to be a costly oversight. Marsh, nicknamed ‘The Bison,’ unleashed a powerful display against MI’s bowling attack with impressive force and meticulous timing. He amassed nine boundaries and two towering sixes, mastering straight drives and direct hits even amid swinging conditions and an uneven pitch.

MITCHELL MARSHMarsh’s dismissal came on the first ball after the Power Play, when he offered a simple return catch to Vignesh Puthur. This opened an opportunity for Mumbai Indians to regain control, and captain Hardik Pandya capitalized on it. He dismissed the formidable Nicholas Pooran with a sharp bouncer, reducing him to a mere 12 runs. Pandya also extended Rishabh Pant’s challenging start to IPL 2025 as the LSG captain misjudged a short ball that lingered in the pitch, resulting in an easy catch at mid-off. Within 24 balls, LSG had lost three crucial wickets for just 38 runs and were in a precarious situation. At this point, Markram stabilized the innings with poise and determination. He found an excellent ally in Ayush Badoni, and together, they built a vital 51-run partnership in just 31 balls, steering the LSG innings back on track.

Aiden Markram reached his half-century off 34 balls during LSG’s innings, but their bid for late runs was curtailed by Pandya’s unwavering performance. The MI captain expertly utilized cutters, forcing LSG’s batsmen to target the larger boundaries. This strategy paid off, resulting in the dismissals of Markram, David Miller, and Akash Deep, as Pandya achieved his first five-wicket haul in T20s. Nevertheless, LSG added invaluable runs, particularly through Miller, who smashed three fours and a six in his brisk 27-run innings from 14 deliveries, propelling LSG to a total of 203 — only the second score above 200 in Lucknow.

MUMBAI INDIANS

Mumbai Indians’ innings suffered an early setback with the loss of both openers, yet Naman Dhir’s aggressive knock kept their hopes alive. Akash Deep, making a return, made an immediate impact by dismissing Will Jacks, who mistimed a pull to deep square leg in his first over. Shardul Thakur followed suit by taking out Ryan Rickelton in a similar fashion. Dhir, promoted to third in the batting order, responded emphatically by attacking Deep in the fourth over with 21 runs, including two sixes and two fours, turning the PowerPlay back in MI’s favor. Suryakumar Yadav, gradually finding his rhythm, added a six, propelling Mumbai to 64 for 2 after six overs, with Dhir charging to 35 from just 15 balls.

SURYA KUMAR YADAVBy the eighth over, MI had reached 86 for 2, but Digvesh Rathi disrupted their momentum with a vital breakthrough. His carrom ball crept through Dhir’s defense, clipping the inside edge and toppling the stumps, ending Dhir’s lively 46 off 24 balls. Though the 69-run partnership steadied MI, Rathi’s economical spell started to slow things down, yielding only 10 runs in his first three overs. Tilak Varma particularly found it hard to score against him, struggling to establish rhythm. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav maintained the chase’s momentum with regular boundaries. At the conclusion of 13 overs, MI was left needing 79 runs off 42 balls, with the match finely balanced. The Indian T20I skipper reached his fifty off 31 balls with boundaries off Ravi Bishnoi and Akash Deep, cutting the requirement to 61 off 30 balls.

LSG had an opportunity to break the partnership when Avesh Khan and Akash Deep missed a run-out chance. However, Avesh made amends by dismissing Suryakumar for 67 from 42 balls as he miscued a lap shot to deep square-leg. Pandya then took to the field, hitting his first ball—a full toss—for four. LSG, however, continued to bowl well, with Rathi delivering an excellent 18th over and Shardul Thakur giving away just seven runs in the penultimate over, prompting MI to withdraw Varma. Avesh Khan faced the challenge of defending 22 runs in the final over. Although he began by conceding a six, he regained composure and expertly delivered yorkers under significant pressure, clinching a thrilling victory for LSG and securing their second win of the season.

Brief Scores:

Lucknow Super Giants 203/8 in 20 overs (Mitchell Marsh 60, Aiden Markram 53; Hardik Pandya 5-36) beat Mumbai Indians 191/5 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 67, Naman Dhir 46; Digvesh Rathi 1-21) by 12 runs.
