GUJARAT TITANS –
Gill hit a couple of boundaries in the first two overs but Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar were disciplined with their lines otherwise, giving the batters little room. Sudharsan added some tempo with a delightful straight drive and a flick for two fours off Boult but a five-run over from Chahar brought about a cloak over GT again. However, the tide turned when Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman — who came in for Will Jacks — was greeted with a four and a straight six by Sudharsan while Gill also got one in a 15-run over. The GT skipper belted Chahar straight over for his first six, then flayed a fly or dies effort for four through midwicket, overthrows coming in between to hand the hosts free runs. That 20-run over from Chahar rounded off a profitable end to the first phase which saw GT rack up 53% of their PowerPlay runs in the final two overs.
GT’s momentum waned again, after a bright start, when Hardik Pandya and Mitchell Santner bowled tightly together. The need to up tempo brought about the end of Gill as he fell to 38, pulling Pandya more or less straight to deep square leg. Buttler quickly stepped on the pedal with the inclusion of Santner in the attack, taking a six (by Satyanarayana Raju error on the boundary) and a four to take GT past the 50-run mark halfway through with a nine-plus scoring rate. MI burned a review when Pandya thought Buttler had edged one to keeper but there was no contact as replays showed. Buttler took another four courtesy a misfield from Naman Dhir and then both batters scored heavily off Raju. The 50-run stand was completed quickly, Buttler having powered to 39 before Mujeeb found a way through. Acting in the role of a middle overs’ support, Sudharsan brought up a fifty off 33 balls with GT keeping the scoring rate above nine.
Shahrukh Khan came in ahead of Sherfane Rutherford but left early, dismissed to Pandya trying to pull a short ball for six. Rutherford and Sudharsan then clobbered the nervous Raju with each smacking a six in a 19-run 17th over. Rutherford also cleared the mid-wicket fence off Trent Boult, only for Sudharsan to fall in the same over, trapped LBW by an excellent well-directed yorker. A direct hit from Pandya then saw Rahul Tewatia run out without facing a ball, a moment later Rutherford fell to Deepak Chahar attempting to reach the boundary in the same over. Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan offered finishing touches when they landed a couple of hefty blows in the last two overs to get GT past 190.
MUMBAI INDIANS-
Rohit Sharma slotted away a few loose deliveries on his pads from its Siraj before the bowler returned to have the star batter bowled with a scrambled seam delivery. Tilak Varma countered Kagiso Rabada, hitting a couple of boundaries and a cheeky mini scoop for a six. However, a six-run over from Siraj, followed by a two-run- over from impact sub Ishant Sharma, applied pressure on MI, the second wicket falling when Ryan Rickelton inside-edged a Siraj delivery, and Suryakumar flicking the pacer for a six. Tilak was leg-before trying to reverse sweep off Rashid but the batter appealed successfully. Rashid, meanwhile, coneeded 4 runs only as MI ended up 18 runs short of GT’s Power Play score.
With the field spread, Rabada bowled a tight over but Ishant was hit around in his second, conceding a four by Tilak and a six by Suryakumar. Eleven more came from the next over from R Sai Kishore, including a four from Suryakumar, as Sudharsan left after hobbling his way into getting a hand on a boundary. Rashid ended with a six-run over but MI had made up the ground by the end of the 10th over, just six runs behind GT’s score at the same stage. Tilak, however, by then had decelerated and to relieve some of the pressure he attempted to go after Prasidh, but failed in his endeavor. Three sixes in the over (by Suryakumar, Sai Kishore) followed, in the back and forth. There was also a nasty blow for Suryakumar on his helmet as he attempted to scoop a short, slow one from Prasidh, who was expensive only in his first over, for four next. Sai Kishore went for only six in the 15th over, despite having been hit for a four, leaving MI with a required rate of more than 15 in the final five overs.
Having already claimed a vital wicket, Prasidh bowled two tight overs. And in his third over’s last ball, he dealt a body blow as Suryakumar fell to his slowest delivery, leaving MI 77 off 24. A struggling Pandya fell to Rabada attempting a ramp shot as GT consolidated their dominance over the game. Dhir and Santner hit a few boundaries of their own but by then it was too late and they could only reduce the margin of defeat.
