RCB defeated CSK by 50 runs on Friday to end their 17-year old jink of never winning a match at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Incidentally, this was RCB’s second win at the venue, with their only other win coming back in IPL 2008. Phil Salt (32 off 16) and Devdutt Padikkal (27 off 14) were also key contributors with the bat. A late cameo by Tim David (22 not out off 8, which included a hat-trick of sixes) also aided RCB’s cause. Noor Ahmad was the pick of the CSK bowlers, claiming 3 for 36. CSK were never really in the chase with RCB having some tidy and disciplined bowling. Josh Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers with numbers of 3 for 21, with Yash Dayal and Liam Livingstone accounting for two wickets each. RCB’s 50-Run Win Over CSK Breaks 17-year jinx .

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BENGALURU-

It is important for teams to capitalize in the initial six overs in the new ball especially when the conditions are expected to be tacky. Salt went out with intent from the start, with a couple of fours off Khaleel Ahmed. The plan to introduce R Ashwin from the other end too went for a six as Salt welcomed the veteran spinner with a maximum over backward square leg and then followed it up with couple more fours in the same over as RCB were off to a flyer. Even as Salt kept finding the boundary with ease, Virat Kohli had a right old struggle and could only get his first boundary with a full toss from Noor Ahmad. In the very same over though, Noor rewarded CSK’s perseverance, as once again, MS Dhoni’s snake-quick hands earned a stumping. Devdutt Padikkal then finished the Power Play on a high, pulling Sam Curran over the ropes for a six.

Padikkal turned out to be the surprise package after the Power Play temporarily as he hit Ravindra Jadeja for a couple of fours and a six to hush the Chepauk crowd. He threatened further damage, before being sent back by a great catch from Ruturaj Gaikwad. But Gaikwad’s effort wasn’t complemented by some of his other colleagues in the field as they continued to shell out chance after chance to Rajat Patidar. Earlier, Kohli finally managed to hit back after being hit on his helmet by Matheesha Pathirana, who was making a return, as he took the Sri Lankan pacer to the cleaners with a six and a four. But he couldn’t keep the momentum going as Noor dismissed him with a slog-sweep shot straight to the fielder at deep mid-wicket. That wicket did not stop Patidar from taking on Jadeja in the very next over and made CSK pay with a hit several boundaries to increase the run rate of RCB and set them up for a considerable finish.

The last phase of the innings got off to a lively start, with Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma hitting a six each in Noor’s last over but in between those two hits, Noor claimed the Englishman Wicket. Khaleel then ended Jitesh’s little cameo early and when Pathirana came back for his last spell, he kept leaking boundaries before redeeming himself with the scalps of Patidar and Krunal Pandya in his last over. That brief period put a dent in RCB’s hopes of getting a total over 200. But right at the finish, Tim David came in and smashed three sixes off Curran to ensure his side finished in style, as RCB put up a 20-over total just four runs short of 200.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS-

The return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar strengthened this attack big time, particularly in a PowerPlay where RCB stitched a hurt towards CSK and got themselves in early command. But it was Josh Hazlewood who made the initial breakthrough with a double wicket over that had CSK right on the backfoot. The woefully out of touch Rahul Tripathi fell in tame fashion, mistiming a pull and getting caught with ease. Gaikwad’s wicket was the bigger loss though as he miscued a short ball and was caught near the boundary that left CSK 8 for 2. Deepak Hooda promoted ahead of impact sub Shivam Dube looked very shaky and eventually nicked one behind for Bhuvneshwar’s first wicket of the season. It left it up to Rachin Ravindra again to bail CSK out, along with Curran who was also pushed ahead of Dube.

Even without dew being visible, RCB’s spinners choked the home side after the PowerPlay as well. That meant something would have to break as the required rate went up. In his bid to clear the ropes, Curran mishit one off Livingstone to be dismissed, and that eventually brought Dube to the middle. He did threaten to start hitting immediately by clattering Suyash Sharma for a six and a four but that left the legspinner to redeem himself by hitting over the run and further hitting the pressure on CSK. It paid immediate dividend as Yash Dayal claimed the wickets of Dube and Ravindra in the same over and in similar mode to take CSK closer to a mammoth defeat. The slowish nature of the track meant CSK never had any momentum going.

And with the home crowd being left quiet for most of the evening, only a small cameo from Dhoni could lift their spirits. The ex-captain obliged by finding the boundary a couple of times against Hazlewood and then taking on Krunal in his last over for a pair of monstrous sixes. He also took the final ball to the boundary as he stayed unbeaten on 30 off just 16 balls. But it was still RCB’s night as Dhoni’s cameo could only narrow the margin of defeat.

Brief scores:

Chennai Super Kings 146/8 in 20 overs (Rachin Ravindra 41, MS Dhoni 30\*; Josh Hazlewood 3/21, Yash Dayal 2/18) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru 196/7 in 20 overs (Rajat Patidar 51, Phil Salt 32; Noor Ahmed 3/36, Matheesha Pathirana 2/36) by 50 runs.
