Bas de Leede delivered a masterful all-round performance, remaining undefeated on 72 while claiming two crucial wickets to guide the Netherlands to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Namibia in their opening T20 World Cup triumph on Tuesday. The seasoned all-rounder first made his mark with precise pace bowling, playing a pivotal role in limiting Namibia to 156-8 at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. De Leede subsequently showcased his batting prowess, unleashing five boundaries and four maximums during his 48-delivery innings to steer his team home with 12 deliveries remaining. His decisive third-wicket stand of 70 runs alongside Colin Ackermann, who contributed 32, established the foundation for the successful pursuit before he sealed victory in partnership with captain Scott Edwards (18 not out).

NAMIBIA-
After choosing to field, the Netherlands executed an effective early containment strategy. The opening three overs produced merely 13 runs while claiming Louren Steenkamp’s wicket, who fell stumped to Aryan Dutt having earlier survived a run-out opportunity. Despite Dutt’s economical bowling display, Namibia found momentum through Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton and Jan Frylinck, who dispatched several boundaries and sixes to propel their team to 40/1 by the PowerPlay’s conclusion.
The Netherlands successfully maintained pressure through additional restrictive overs after the PowerPlay period, eventually breaking a valuable 50-run partnership when Frylinck departed in the 10th over. Loftie-Eaton then combined with skipper Gerhard Erasmus for an aggressive 35-run association, accumulating three fours and two sixes across just two overs before the partnership concluded with Erasmus’s dismissal via a caught opportunity in the 13th over.
As per the match progress, Namibia could not keep up their good performance regarding maintaining the same energy after that point. After getting a chance and nearly getting run-out on the same ball, we are seeing Loftie-Eaton getting out in the 15th over only. JJ Smit surely looked dangerous when he hit two consecutive sixes off Roelof van der Merwe in the 16th over. Moreover, Bas de Leede dismissed him in the next over by bowling him out. Namibia actually fell from 127-4 to 156-8, and they definitely scored only 31 runs in the last four overs.
NETHERLANDS-
Basically, Max O’Dowd got out early but Michael Levitt did the same attacking against Namibia. Further, basically he hit three sixes and scored 28 runs in 15 balls, but got out in the same sixth over. The Netherlands actually scored 50 runs for 2 wickets after the PowerPlay overs. They definitely kept chasing the target with strong focus.
After this, de Leede and Colin Ackermann built a crucial 70-run partnership that further strengthened their team’s position, and this partnership itself became the defining moment of their innings. The two players started carefully but made sure Netherlands itself did not fall behind the required run rate, and they further maintained steady progress throughout their partnership. The batsmen surely began playing various shots from the 11th over onwards. Moreover, Namibia clearly regretted missing the chance to dismiss Ackermann in the earlier over.
Ackermann got out in the 14th over which separated them, but de Leede continued batting without worry and further completed his fifty in 38 balls after two more overs. As per the match situation, De Leede and Scott Edwards made sure there were no more problems regarding the chase, and a 21-run 18th over helped Netherlands win easily with seven wickets left and two overs remaining.
Brief Scores:
Netherlands surely dominated Namibia by defeating them with 7 wickets, chasing down the target of 157 runs with ease. Moreover, Bas de Leede’s unbeaten 72 runs proved to be the match-winning performance after his earlier bowling figures of 2-20 had restricted Namibia to 156-8.
