Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured their playoff spot with a commanding 23-run victory over Punjab Kings, powered by brilliant half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer, plus an outstanding opening bowling performance by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Kohli contributed 58 runs while Iyer remained unbeaten on 73, supported by Devdutt Padikkal’s valuable 45 as RCB posted an imposing 222 for 4 across their 20 overs. Kumar’s early strike (2/38) proved crucial as he dismissed Punjab’s threatening opening duo of Priyansh Arya (0) and Prabhsimran Singh (2), effectively closing the door on their chase. Despite their efforts, Punjab could only reach 199 for 8 in their complete quota of overs. Fast bowler Rasikh Salam (3/36) further damaged Punjab’s hopes by claiming captain Shreyas Iyer’s wicket (1) during the fourth over, leaving the visitors struggling at 19 for 3. RCB secures playoff qualification with win over Punjab.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BENGALURU-
Devdutt Padikkal launched the opening delivery he encountered over the boundary for the third occasion this season, showcasing his remarkable transformation in T20 cricket. His powerful straight drive against Harpreet Brar followed Jacob Bethell’s early dismissal.
Previous RCB losses when batting first have frequently featured multiple Powerplay wickets. However, Padikkal and Virat Kohli prevented such a collapse, though their six-over total of 61 seemed somewhat modest. Kohli scored 24 from 15 deliveries while Padikkal managed 23 off 14. The acceleration arrived immediately following the Powerplay as Yuzvendra Chahal’s opening over vanished for 21 runs, propelling RCB’s scoring rate beyond 11 per over.
Rajat Patidar sat out due to concussion protocols after taking a Kartik Tyagi bouncer to his helmet in the preceding match. This absence prompted RCB to revert to an earlier lineup, bringing back Romario Shepherd for Jacob Duffy while positioning Venkatesh Iyer at number four.

Following another fifty-plus partnership between Padikkal and Kohli – worth 76 runs from 41 balls – Iyer maintained the aggressive tempo alongside Kohli. As Kohli smoothly progressed toward his half-century, Iyer required more time to find his rhythm, reaching 15 from 14 before accelerating. He carved out consecutive boundaries against Harpreet Brar before targeting Yuzvendra Chahal for two maximums, helping RCB exploit favorable matchups.
Kohli departed on the final delivery of the 15th over, providing Tim David an ideal entry situation. Though David faced just two deliveries across the subsequent two overs, Iyer’s explosive batting at the opposite end compensated magnificently.
Iyer hammered 27 runs from his 10 balls during this period, including 19 in a single over from Lockie Ferguson. While Azmatullah Omarzai bowled an effective 19th over, David discovered vital boundaries during the closing stages, concluding with 28 from 12 balls to propel RCB to 222. Iyer remained not out, demonstrating his worth and providing RCB with an alternative team composition option.
PUNJAB KINGS-
Punjab’s pursuit of 222 depended significantly on their inexperienced openers’ ability to negotiate Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood’s new-ball challenge. Unfortunately, they couldn’t withstand the Purple Cap winner’s Powerplay assault.

Priyansh Arya mistimed a pull shot against a delivery that gripped the surface, finding the fielder at mid-on. Prabhsimran Singh attempted to cut Kumar but edged faintly to the slip cordon. Punjab then suffered another devastating blow when Rasikh Dar struck during his opening over, finding Shreyas Iyer’s edge with a good-length delivery. Cooper Connolly and Suryansh Shedge briefly fought back, but at 49 for 3, Punjab faced an uphill battle.
By the 11th over, Punjab had surrendered half their batting lineup while maintaining a run rate below 9 per over. The momentum shifted when Shashank Singh, elevated above Omarzai in the order, clubbed three sixes off Suyash Sharma in a 20-run over. Bethell subsequently dropped Marcus Stoinis off Krunal Pandya’s bowling, an over that yielded Shashank two additional boundaries. The partnership accumulated 67 runs from 32 deliveries before Stoinis fell for 37, missing a simple full toss from Hazlewood and being given out LBW.
Punjab required 77 from their remaining five overs, which seemed achievable given the improving batting conditions. However, similar to last year’s final, Shashank’s excellent 27-ball 56 became meaningless due to the earlier collapse, particularly against RCB’s formidable death-bowling attack featuring Kumar, Hazlewood, and Dar.
Brief scores:
Royal Challengers Bengaluru 222/4 in 20 overs [Venkatesh Iyer 73* (40), Virat Kohli 58 (37); Harpreet Brar 2-35] defeated Punjab Kings 199/8 in 20 overs [Shashank Singh 56 (27); Rasikh Dar 3-36, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2-39)] by 23 runs.
