Tilak Varma delivered a spectacular unbeaten 75 from just 33 deliveries to steer Mumbai Indians (MI) to a thrilling triumph against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their IPL 2026 encounter at Dharamsala on Thursday. Pursuing a target of 201, MI secured victory with a single delivery remaining. Ryan Rickelton blazed to 48 to establish a rapid foundation, while Tilak and Will Jacks (25* from 10 balls) completed the triumph. Earlier, PBKS managed 200/8 from their 20 overs after MI’s interim captain Jasprit Bumrah chose to bowl first. Prabhsimran Singh led the scoring with 57, despite being given two lifelines through dropped catches. Shardul Thakur claimed four scalps, though Azmatullah Omarzai, Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett struck powerful late innings to salvage PBKS. This marks PBKS’s fifth straight defeat. Tilak and Shardul clinch a well-chased victory as Punjab Kings suffer their fifth consecutive loss .

PUNJAB KINGS
Punjab Kings accumulated 55 runs during the initial six overs while appearing unsteady throughout. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh typically excel at exploiting the new ball, but struggled to find their rhythm on this occasion. Dharamsala’s conditions once again favored the pace attack, helping restrict the naturally aggressive opening pair. Both batsmen were constrained to such a degree that PBKS emerged from the Powerplay without launching a single maximum, though they managed eleven boundaries. Many attempted big shots became mishits that landed safely in unoccupied areas, while Prabhsimran benefited from early fortune when Naman Dhir spilled a straightforward chance off Bumrah at first slip. Deepak Chahar subsequently dismissed Arya with a slower delivery, catching him off-guard and disturbing his timber for a 17-ball 22.
Prabhsimran capitalized on MI’s early clemency, plus another chance in the seventh over from Corbin Bosch during his spell, by beginning to find his groove. Cooper Connolly struck the innings’ inaugural six – against Raghu Sharma in the eighth over, while Prabhsimran launched two maximums off the spinner’s subsequent over. PBKS experienced a brief scoring surge until the 11th over where momentum shifted, before being forced into decline.

Shardul Thakur spearheaded the momentum shift. Initially, he dismissed Prabhsimran via a catch at third man, then produced one of the tournament’s finest deliveries against his close friend Shreyas Iyer, achieving subtle away movement from a good length to clip the off-stump’s peak.
This double-wicket over preceded Raj Bawa’s dismissal of Connolly in the 13th. Suryansh Shedge entered with ambitions of reversing fortune and struck a six in the identical over, but subsequently became Shardul’s third victim as he drove a full delivery powerfully toward mid-wicket where Bawa held a brilliant catch. Corbin Bosch then dismissed Shashank Singh leg before wicket, who departed with his review intact. PBKS surrendered half their lineup during the middle phase for merely 80 runs.
Punjab still reached 200, thanks to Azmatullah Omarzai and valuable smaller contributions from impact substitute Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett. Omarzai launched the first of his four sixes in the 15th over and unleashed his strokeplay during the death overs against Thakur. He then attacked Chahar for a boundary and two sixes before falling in the 18th over after a 17-ball 38. Vinod and Bartlett subsequently combined for 33 runs from 15 balls.
MUMBAI INDIANS
Rohit Sharma occupied much of the Powerplay stationed at the non-striker’s end while Ryan Rickelton attacked the PBKS bowling. Rohit struggled for timing but Rickelton operated on a different level to establish the chase’s foundation. He commenced with a six off Omarzai in the second over, then plundered 15 from Marco Jansen’s next over. He maintained his assault against Bartlett and Arshdeep – claiming all four Powerplay boundaries and four of five sixes in that phase. With Rohit Sharma crawling to 12 from 15 balls, including the fifth six, MI barely maintained the required rate during that period.
Rickelton found the deep backward square leg fielder in the seventh over – off Omarzai, allowing PBKS to tighten their grip. The previous match at this venue featured 39 overs of pace bowling, but Yuzvendra Chahal demonstrated during the middle overs why variation was crucial today. He dismissed Rohit Sharma with a flat, rapid, spinning delivery and surrendered just 12 runs across three overs. Jansen recovered impressively from his Powerplay struggles, conceding only five in his third over while also removing Naman Dhir. Tilak Varma and Sherfane Rutherford extracted 13 from an Omarzai over, but Arshdeep returned to deliver a restrictive 15th over costing eight runs, setting MI 72 from 30 balls.

Tilak launched a Chahal delivery beyond the stadium roof with a massive 106-meter six opening the 16th over. Twenty runs flowed from that over, yet momentum continued oscillating. Omarzai responded by removing Rutherford while conceding merely two runs in the 17th over. However, Tilak compensated for that parsimony by plundering 22 from Jansen, beginning and concluding that over with sixes. Will Jacks contributed by greeting Arshdeep with a wide full delivery dispatched for six over point. Arshdeep recovered admirably, though a fortunate outside edge boundary reduced the requirement to 15 from 6 balls.
Jacks transformed that into 9 from 5 by launching a straight six off Bartlett’s opening delivery of the final over. Strike rotation occurred and Bartlett managed a dot ball to half-centurion Tilak. The following delivery – short and wide – was demolished over extra cover for six. Tilak then struck the winning runs – another six – completing an unbeaten 75 from 33 balls. His innings featured six boundaries and six maximums.
