Punjab Kings secured a thrilling five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in their latest Indian Premier League encounter, with captain Shreyas Iyer delivering an impressive half-century performance in Chennai on Friday. PBKS successfully chased down the target, reaching 210 for 5 in just 18.4 overs to claim their second straight victory this season. Iyer contributed a quickfire 50 from 29 balls.
After being asked to bat first, CSK built their innings around a solid 96-run stand for the second wicket between Mhatre and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (28 from 22 deliveries), establishing a strong platform for a challenging total at Chepauk. CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
Samson’s debut appearance as a Super King at Chepauk didn’t unfold as he would have hoped. The wicketkeeper struggled against deliveries that swung away from him and made matters worse by creating distance from his stumps while attempting to free up his shots. After repeatedly doing this against Xavier Bartlett’s bowling, he attempted to drive a good-length ball on middle stump but managed only an edge to the keeper.

CSK’s innings was largely rescued by Ayush Mhatre’s exceptional 73, which transformed the Powerplay into a productive period following Sanju Samson’s early dismissal. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was content to give Mhatre the majority of the strike, with the 18-year-old prodigy showing no hesitation in playing aggressive shots. The Super Kings did face a challenging period during the middle overs when both Gaikwad and Mhatre were dismissed in back-to-back overs, and Kartik Sharma also departed without making a significant contribution. However, Sarfaraz Khan revitalized the innings with an explosive 12-ball 32, before Shivam Dube provided the perfect finale. PBKS contributed to CSK’s total with numerous extras, while their painfully slow over-rate forced them to bring an additional fielder inside the circle after the 18th over.
PUNJAB KINGS
The defining moment came through Priyansh Arya’s explosive start. The left-handed batsman, who had hammered a century against the same opponents the previous year, once again found his groove as 34 runs flowed from the opening two overs. While his opening partner Prabhsimran Singh struggled early on with several play-and-miss moments, Arya’s devastating 11-ball 39 propelled PBKS to 50 in just 3.2 overs, ensuring they never fell behind in the chase.

Prabhsimran contributed 42 runs, though his innings was sprinkled with fortunate moments. Fittingly, his innings concluded with a run-out, but Cooper Connolly read the pitch conditions expertly before accelerating his scoring rate, maintaining the chase’s momentum through the middle period. After Connolly’s departure, captain Shreyas Iyer took charge by launching a couple of maximums off Rahul Chahar before cruising to a 26-ball half-century that effectively sealed the victory. This result extended PBKS’ remarkable winning streak at Chepauk to four matches while improving their overall head-to-head advantage to 17-16 against the Super Kings.
Brief scores:
Chennai Super Kings 209/5 in 20 overs (Ayush Mhatre 73 (43), Shivam Dube 45* (27), Sarfaraz Khan 32 (12), Vijaykumar Vyshak 2-38) lost to Punjab Kings 210/5 in 18.4 overs (Shreyas Iyer 50 (29), Priyansh Arya 39 (11), Cooper Connolly 36 (22)) by 5 wickets.
