ENGLAND-
Unorthodox It was a gloomy start’s play after a delay caused by rain and England were quickly gloomier when Jacob Duffy removed Ben Duckett in the third over. Zakary Foulkes, who snared an impressive four-fer in the series opener, accounted for the other opener – Jamie Smith, in the sixth over. Tickner, in the side for Matt Henry, then ended Joe Root’s pristine start with a catching delivery. Harry Brook strode out at 51 for 3, and yet again seemed England’s savior. He struck fours off Smith and Tickner, and heaved Santner for a six over square leg. But an attempt to replicate his Mount Maunganui heroics was cut short when he fell victim to a stunning one-handed catch by Will Young at backward point. Nathan Smith had removed Jacob Bethell and Jos Buttler before Santner’s strike, as England floundered at 105 for 6.
Jamie Overton and Sam Curran briefly delayed the inevitable until a feisty 38-run stand that was still the highest for any wicket on an otherwise damning score-sheet. Overton was the center of attention as he whipped Bracewell for a four and muscled Santner for four to two sixes. Of the two batsmen, Curran was the more circumspect, and it was Bracewell who cleaned him up in the 29th over. Overton greeted that with a four and a six off Tickner. He did top off his return to the side with taking care of tail to end up with four wickets. He had a diving Brydon Carse caught in the deep hooking, deceived Overton with a slower ball hit to mid-off and saw Adil Rashid pull a short one to mid-wicket.
NEW ZEALAND-
New Zealand played extremely cautiously at the start. Jofra Archer, making his first ODI appearance against New Zealand since that memorable 2019 World Cup final, got Young out leg before wicket in the very first over. Ravindra and Kane Williamson then built their innings carefully and slowly, reaching 32 for 1 after 10 overs, with 11 of those runs scored in the final over of that spell. Ravindra greeted Curran’s arrival by hitting a couple of crisp boundaries, but Overton quickly dampened New Zealand’s momentum by getting Williamson out – the batsman dragged an inside edge back onto his own stumps.
Ravindra and Mitchell steadied the innings over the following 10 overs, with Ravindra reaching his fifty during this partnership. Brook decided to bring Archer back into the attack looking for a breakthrough and got exactly what he wanted. The quick bowler bowled a sharp bouncer at 140kmph that saw the left-handed Ravindra caught down at fine leg for 54.
New Zealand suddenly found themselves sliding from 105 for 3 to 118 for 5 as Rashid and Archer created more trouble, hoping to pull off a dramatic late comeback. However, that wasn’t meant to happen as Mitchell and Santner put together a blistering partnership of 59 runs from only 31 deliveries to guide their team home. Mitchell remained not out on 56, marking his second consecutive half-century, while Santner played an aggressive knock of 34 from just 17 balls, smashing two boundaries and a six.
