West Indies dominated Zimbabwe with a massive 107-run victory in their T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 match in Mumbai on Monday, thanks to Shimron Hetmyer’s explosive 85 off just 34 balls and brilliant bowling performances from spinners Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein. After being asked to bat first, the West Indies smashed their way to 254/6 in 20 overs – the second-biggest total ever recorded in T20 World Cup history. Hetmyer was absolutely on fire, blasting the quickest fifty by any West Indian in T20 World Cups in just 19 deliveries. Rovman Powell chipped in with a solid 59 off 35 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford remained unbeaten on 31 from 13 balls. When it was time to bowl, the West Indies completely dismantled Zimbabwe for 147 in 17.4 overs. Motie was the star with four scalps, and Hosein grabbed three wickets, including a brilliant double-wicket maiden over. This massive win boosted West Indies’ net-run-rate above South Africa in Super 8 Group 1, putting pressure on India who now really need to beat West Indies to stay in contention for the semi-finals. WEST INDIES
Zimbabwe looked like they might have things under control early on when Brandon King’s struggles with the bat continued. Shai Hope also got out during the powerplay, leaving West Indies at 55. But nobody was ready for what came next. Hetmyer went absolutely berserk against the spinners, launching Graeme Cremer for consecutive sixes. Even the usually dependable Sikandar Raza couldn’t escape the carnage as Hetmyer smashed him for three massive sixes. Those five maximums came in just six balls as he reached his incredible 19-ball fifty. Raza tried to fight back in his next over, but Hetmyer just kept swinging for the fences.

West Indies reached 115 at the ten-over mark, and when Cremer started getting some turn to trouble Rovman Powell, it looked like Zimbabwe might slow things down. But Powell quickly crushed those hopes by taking over the destruction from Hetmyer. While Hetmyer had destroyed the spinners, Powell went after the fast bowlers, smacking them around with ease to reach his own fifty. Even after Brian Bennett took another sharp catch to finally break the century partnership, the damage was already massive. The final five overs were pure chaos as Jason Holder, Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd all joined the six-hitting party, pushing the total way beyond what Zimbabwe could ever chase down.
ZIMBABWE-
Basically the West Indies struck three times in the first 16 balls and it was clear the same result was coming. Basically, Akeal Hosein beat Bennett fair and square in one of those strikes, the same way any good player would. When West Indies actually crossed 200 runs, Zimbabwe’s young opener was definitely going to find it hard to keep his record of not getting out in the tournament. Further, as per the match details, Ryan Burl got out to the fielder three balls after his dismissal. As per the match situation from 20/3, Zimbabwe played well regarding their recovery from the difficult position. As per the match situation, Dion Myers hit boundaries at the right time and Raza also scored well regarding his slow start of eight balls without runs.

At the halfway point, Zimbabwe reached 87/4 but their hopes of batting further and limiting damage were destroyed when Gudakesh Motie took two wickets in two balls itself. He actually took one more wicket in his last over and definitely finished with four wickets total. As per the final moments, Evans gave Zimbabwe some happiness on a sad evening by hitting five sixes in just 10 balls before getting out as the 10th player. This big defeat will surely affect much more than just Zimbabwe’s chances. Moreover, the results will likely create problems in many other areas too. India needs to beat Zimbabwe badly and we are seeing that only South Africa can help by defeating West Indies who have not lost any match yet.
Brief scores:
