Day 1-
The toss got delayed by an hour in Kanpur and when it finally happened, India captain Rohit Sharma won it and chose to bowl first. Earlier on, Deep struck in his very first over in the ninth over of the game. He sent Bangladesh opener Zakir Hasan back to the pavilion for a 24-ball duck after India decided to field first.
Akash Deep struck twice in the first hour but Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul helped them recover to reach 74/2 by Lunch. Ravichandran Ashwin broke a 51-run stand between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque early in the second session by getting rid of Shanto.
Heavy rains forced stumps on the first day just nine overs into the second session. Bangladesh stood at 107/3 in 35 overs when bad light led the umpires to take players off the field with less than an hour of play left in the second session. This was followed by a heavy downpour that finished off play for the rest of the day. Mominul Haque was not out on 40 off 81 balls while Mushfiqur Rahim stayed unbeaten on six off 13 balls.
Day 4 –
The morning started okay for Bangladesh, even though they lost three big wickets. Mominul Haque (107\*) tried hard, hitting a solid century. But his team didn’t help much, especially the last few guys. They went from 224-6 to all out at 233.
India’s Jasprit Bumrah (3-50) was on fire today. The other bowlers backed him up well. Ravindra Jadeja hit a milestone, getting his 300th Test wicket. He’s now in the special club of players with both 3000 runs & 300 wickets in Tests.
With 55 overs lost on day one and then two full days of rain, the match seemed like it would just be a boring draw. But India had other plans on the second last day.
India wanted to get a result & they batted super fast:
Fastest 50 in Tests: 2.6 overs
Fastest 100 in Tests: 10.1 overs
Fastest 150 in Tests: 18.2 overs
Fastest 200 in Tests: 24.2 overs
Fastest 250 in Tests: 30.1 overs
Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal got their team fifty in only three overs—fastest ever in Test history! Sharma hit three sixes and a boundary, scoring 23 from just 11 balls before Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled him out at 55-1. Jaiswal made his sixth Test half-century with a quickfire 72 from just 51 balls, including twelve boundaries and a couple of sixes.
India smashed their own world record by reaching their first hundred runs in just 10.1 overs. After Jaiswal, Shubman Gill (39 off 36) and Rishabh Pant (9 off 11) fell quickly to Hasan Mahmud and Shakib Al Hasan, middle-order kings Virat Kohli (47 off 35) and KL Rahul (68 off 43) put together a rapid-fire partnership of 87 runs for the fifth wicket, shooting past Bangladesh’s first innings score in less than one session.
Bangladesh’s spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan fought back, taking four wickets each before Rohit Sharma declared India’s innings at 285-9 after just 34.4 overs with a lead of 52 runs.
In the final hour of Day four, Bangladesh struggled again: Zakir Hasan and night watchman Hasan Mahmud got out to Ravichandran Ashwin (2-14), ending the day at 26-2 by stumps.
Day 5-
Starting off, Bangladesh was just 26 runs shy. Their main goal? To get ahead without losing a wicket. But, guess what? Things didn’t go as planned. Mominul Haque, the hero from the first innings, got tricked by Rohit Sharma and his crew. They knew he loved sweeping, so they put a leg slip in place. This meant no cheeky paddle shots for Mominul. Trying to do a hard sweep, he hit it straight to KL Rahul who made an awesome catch at leg slip off Ashwin.
Shadman came in batting with all positivity and hit a bunch of boundaries with perfect timing. He defended well, left the tricky balls alone & smashed any bad deliveries. Najmul Hossain Shanto, the captain, looked relaxed too as they made a good fifty partnership to keep hope alive for their team. Then came Ravindra Jadeja (who hadn’t bowled till then) and struck right away with a disastrous shot from Shanto. The Bangladesh captain attempted a risky reverse sweep and got bowled around his legs. That’s just not cool for a specialist batter & captain.
Jadeja’s breakthrough opened the floodgates! He soon had Litton Das caught behind and then got an easy return catch from Shakib Al Hasan. Shadman also fell after his fifty, playing a loose shot against determined Akash Deep. From being 91/3, Bangladesh was crumbling at 94/7 with India going all out. Bumrah quickly cleaned up the tailenders Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam one after another. Rahim tried to delay things by keeping the strike with last man Khaled Ahmed but eventually fell to classic Bumrah just before the extended lunch break.
With only 95 runs needed to win, India’s approach didn’t change from their first innings attack mode. Rohit Sharma hit a boundary right away but then got out to Mehidy Hasan as Bangladesh started spinning from both ends.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (51) hit his second fifty of the game while Virat Kohli (29) took care of most of the other scoring even though Jaiswal got out just before victory.
Chasing 95, India was always going to win—it was just a matter of when. Jaiswal made sure they did it quickly enough to clinch an awesome win for India at home! Some might think winning under home conditions against weaker opposition isn’t much, but India’s determination made this one memorable.
