DAY 1-
Bangladesh struck early after deciding to bowl. The pacemen took advantage of the favorable conditions. Taskin Ahmed troubled Jaiswal & Rohit Sharma at the start. Rohit narrowly escaped an lbw review off Mahmud’s bowling due to the umpire’s call. Yet, Rohit did not last long. He edged one to second slip as Mahmud claimed his first wicket. Shubman Gill fell soon after for a duck & Virat Kohli edged to the ‘keeper – all inflicted by Mahmud – leaving India at 34/3.
Nahid Rana’s pace brought fresh challenges. But Rishabh Pant settled in by hitting boundaries after returning to Test cricket nearly two years later. Pant and Jaiswal forged a solid 62-run partnership with consistent boundaries and good rotation of strike.
Mahmud continued troubling Indian batters. He dismissed Pant for 39 just after Lunch. A cautious stand between Jaiswal and KL Rahul followed; Jaiswal reached his fifty but soon fell to Rana’s short delivery ending their 48-run stand. Shortly after that Rahul got caught at short-leg off Mehidy’s delivery leaving India in dire straits.
Ashwin entered with positive intent—boundaries flowed regularly just before Tea with Jadeja providing support.
Ashwin reached a fifty off just 58 balls and together with Jadeja raised a 100-run partnership off only 114 deliveries. Ashwin continued collecting fours through ramp shots and glances off Rana frustrating the Bangladesh team with frequent boundaries combined with singles and twos. Jadeja & Ashwin surpassed Tendulkar & Zaheer Khan’s 133-run partnership in 2004 registering India’s highest seventh-wicket stand against Bangladesh. Jadeja then reached his fifty while dispatching short balls from Mehidy for multiple boundaries.
A brilliant century by Ravichandran Ashwin ensured India’s robust comeback on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh. Ashwin (102*) along with Jadeja (86*) set a record seventh-wicket stand pushing India into a strong position after initial setbacks in the first two sessions.
Day 2-
India wrapped up their innings with a total of 376 runs. The second new ball was there for the taking early on Day 2 of the first Test at Chepauk Stadium, and Bangladesh seized it. Desperate for a quick breakthrough, Taskin Ahmed delivered, having Ravindra Jadeja edge one to thekeeper just the third over of the day. Jadeja couldn’t add to his overnight score of 86, narrowly missing out on his fifth Test century. His partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin halted at 199 runs. Ashwin eventually departed for 113 off 133 deliveries.
Jasprit Bumrah spearheaded India’s attack, claiming a wicket in the very first over of Bangladesh’s innings. Akash Deep then struck twice, sending Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque back to the pavilion on consecutive balls in the ninth over, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 26/3 by Lunch.
Bumrah continued his dominance with a four-wicket haul, restricting Bangladesh to 149 runs in 47.1 overs. Though Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das steadied the ship briefly during the second session against an unyielding Indian attack, by Tea time, India had largely taken control.
Litton Das attempted a big sweep off Ravindra Jadeja but fell for 22 off 42 balls. His partnership with Shakib ended at 51 off 94 deliveries. Shortly after, Shakib also succumbed trying to sweep Jadeja. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud tried to hold their ground throughout much of the session until Mahmud was dismissed by Bumrah on the last ball before Tea. Bangladesh went into the break at 112/8, trailing India by a significant 264 runs.
Mehidy and Taskin Ahmed managed to make India wait with an 18-run partnership. However, Bumrah’s short deliveries eventually got Taskin bowled out with a yorker. Siraj returned to dismiss Rana, securing India a lead of 227 runs.
By Stumps, India had posted 81/3 in 23 overs and led by a commanding 308 runs on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai. Shubman Gill (33\*) and Rishabh Pant (12\*) remained unbeaten in India’s second innings and will resume batting on Day 3. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) fell to Nahid Rana while Rohit Sharma (5) was taken down by Taskin Ahmed. Additionally, Virat Kohli (17) was dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Day 3-
Shubman Gill & Rishabh Pant hit centuries and built a huge 167-run partnership, leaving Bangladesh in the dust. Surprisingly, the game started on time despite rain overnight and in the early morning. Pant kickstarted India’s innings with a pull shot off Mehidy Hasan Miraz for a four. His second boundary was a controlled pull off Hasan Mahmud.
Gill started cautiously. Then he went down the track and hit two sixes off Mehidy, reaching a solid half-century. The pair soon raised a fifty-run stand, and India’s lead went past 350. Even though India started slowly in the first hour, scoring only 48 runs in 15 overs, Pant kept striking fours, including another off Mehidy.
Pant reached his fifty about 30 minutes into the second hour, needing 88 balls to get there since he had started the day at 12 off 13 balls. He executed a reverse-sweep off Shakib Al Hasan for a four to mark their century stand.
Openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam put together a confident 62-run stand for Bangladesh. They drove well against the pacers, challenging both Mohammad Siraj & Jasprit Bumrah a little bit. But then Hasan got caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully after he edged a ball from Bumrah.
By the end of day three, India was firmly in control thanks to centuries from Shubman Gill & Rishabh Pant. Their efforts enabled India to declare with a lead of 514 and more than two and a half days left in this first Test at Chennai In response, Bangladesh showed better batting compared to their first attempt but still lost four wickets, with R Ashwin being the main destroyer-in-chief.
Day 4-
The visitors started the fourth morning needing 357 more & despite the huge task, both Najmul Hasan Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan made it through the first hour without a slip. The left-handers faced Mohammad Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah’s tricky angles but came out unscathed. Jadeja was also quite a handful, firing the ball into the rough outside their off-stump, keeping them on their toes. The uneven turn and bounce posed challenges for ‘keeper Rishabh Pant too, who missed a stumping chance off Shakib.
They tried sweeping to put Jadeja off his game, getting some welcome boundaries in their 48-run stand. Still, a wicket felt inevitable & it appeared when R Ashwin entered the attack, striking in his first over. Shakib got an inside edge snapped up at short leg, opening up the floodgates. The spin twins bowled together and challenged both edges of the batters, dominating the lineup. Litton Das got beaten a couple of times before nicking Jadeja to slip. Mehidy Hasan attempted a big swing and holed out to long-on, giving Ashwin his 37th Test five-fer, matching Shane Warne on the all-time list. He added one more when Taskin Ahmed top-edged a slog as things fell apart quickly.
Jadeja wrapped it up by going past Hasan Mahmud’s wild slog, reaching 299 Test wickets and giving India a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.
