WEST INDIES-

Australia won the toss and elected to field on the same wicket that was used the day before. It was meant to be a good pitch for batting, and West Indies began in explosive style, racing to 58 for no loss in the first six overs. But they lost three wickets in doing so. Brandon King smacked a couple of early boundaries before he was out in the second over when he chipped Xavier Bartlett to mid-wicket. Next to go was Shai Hope, mistiming a pull that landed with Maxwell at straightish mid-on. Roston Chase attempted to go over the top but couldn’t get as far as he would have liked and spooned it back to Maxwell, who took another brilliant catch – this time running across from mid-on and trapping it in one hand.

There were setbacks, however, Sherfane Rutherford continuing to attack with two sixes and four fours in a 15-ball 31. But after smashing a big six, he was again in the mood to go next ball, and skied a shot straight to Mitchell Marsh off Adam Zampa. After that Hetmyer and Powell contributed a few lusty blows, Hetmyer clubbing consecutive sixes off Zampa. But he was also out trying to do so, caught by Mitchell Owen at long-on. At the halfway stage, West Indies were 111 for 5 and desperate for a strong finish.

Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd chipped in with important runs towards the end, cracking small scores in boundaries against Zampa and Bartlett. Akeal Hosein also lifted one clear of the ropes, but the batting power play and last five overs brought 41 runs. With just four balls left in the innings, rain interrupted play briefly, but after play resumed, a miserly last over from Nathan Ellis restricted West Indies to 205 for 9.

AUSTRALIA-

In response, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh was dismissed for a duck in the opening over. He was lbw to Jediah Blades, although television replays afterwards suggested the ball had pitched outside leg. Australia showed no signs of slowing down, however, as Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell went on the offensive from the start. While Inglis manufactured his boundaries with a combination of scoops, cuts and pulls – Maxwell carted one six 101 meters and rarely stopped clearing the ropes. Between them, they put on a sprightly stand and by the end of the Power Play, Australia were 66 for 1 and in control.

Inglis reached his 50 in 28 balls before being caught in the deep on off Shepherd. Maxwell was straightaway back in that zone again, taking sixes off Forde and Shepherd, but when he went after it again, he was caught in the deep, three short of fifty, off Akeal Hosein. Australia slumped from 129 for 2 to 134 for 5 when Mitchell Owen and Cooper Connolly went in the same over to Blades, who finished with splendid returns of 3 for 29.

West Indies felt they had an inch of space but Green, who was already in, seized control quietly. He shared a 51-run stand with Aaron Hardie, who too chipped in with 23. The pair have ran smartly inbetween the wickets and hit boundaries when required. While Hardie got out and Bartlett was unfortunate to be run out at the non-striker’s end after a deflection, Green remained rock-hard, brought up his third fifty of the series, and sealed the chase with a single in the final over.

Brief Scores:

West Indies 205/9 in 20 overs (Rutherford 31; Zampa 3-54) lost to Australia 206/7 in 19.2 overs (Green 55\*, Inglis 51; Blades 3-29) by three wickets.
