It was Sri Lanka’s ninth innings win over Bangladesh, and gave them the series 1-0, but also invaluable World Test Championship points. The damage was done initially by Prabath Jayasuriya – with some handy assists from wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis, who had spent the previous day off the field with a sore shoulder – who completed figures of 5 for 56, his 12th five-wicket haul in Tests.

DAY-1

Opting to bat, Bangladesh didn’t have the great of starts as Anamul Haque was bowled for a 10-ball duck by Asitha Fernando as the batter was put down earlier. A 38-run partnership followed for Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam, arresting Bangladesh on a Day 1 pitch that had started turning square from the first session. The duo added runs at a good pace until Dhananjaya broke the partnership by getting Mominul caught at cover trying to punch the ball through the off side. Shadman and Najmul Hossain Shanto ensured further damage wouldn’t be done before Lunch as they went to the break with 71 runs in 26 overs on the board.

But Bangladesh fell early in the second session, when Najmul, the other centurion from the first game, departed for eight, trapped lbw by Vishwa Fernando, who replaced Milan Rathnayake in the starting eleven. The lengths too were little less intimidating: after pushing down a short ball, Vishwa Fernando kept a length ball up, and the Bangladesh captain flirted and edged to the ‘keeper. Tharindu Ratnayake produced Shadman’s wicket when Shadman played a loose drive in to the hands of De Silva off Kusal Mendis’ gloves. Sri Lanka had Bangladesh in trouble at 90/4 when rain intervened in Colombo to stop play for a long period.

When play resumed, Mushfiqur Rahim got a life as he swept slogswept and was dropped at deep midwicket. He made the most from the miss and built a valuable stand with Litton Das, adding 67 for the fifth wicket. All-rounder Dinusha, who bowls left-arm orthodox, claimed his first wicket in Test cricket when he made Litton edge to first slip trying to cut, with Kusal Mendis eventually pouching the ball after an initial juggle. Bangladesh were 144 for five at tea with 73 runs scored in 23 overs by the home team for the loss of two wickets.

When Tigers were looking to push towards a good total – Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who made a comeback in the XI after missing out the opening Test due to illness, were the men Bangladesh had in the hut. However, they had added only 17 more when Rahim departed, to Dinusha, smiting a slogsweep only for Vishwa Fernando to clutch a well-judged catch. Nayeem Hasan provided some support to Mehidy when they started the rebuilding work from the scratch but this partnership, too, didn’t even reach 50, finishing on 37. Mehidy, playing away from his body, edged a Vishwa Fernando delivery to slip to be out for 31. Nayeem was removed by with a well-directed delivery from Asitha Fernando in the over before Stumps.

DAY-2

Beginning the day at 220/8, Bangladesh’s attempt to prolong their first innings took a blow in the first over of the day, with Asitha Fernando dismissing Ebadot Hossain lbw for 8 to put an end to the ninth wicket stand which lasted 28 balls and produced 15 runs. Taijul Islam, though, helped put up the fight, as he too hit a couple of boundaries for a handy 33. Nahid Rana however kept the scoring rate high in the final over with seven-ball struggle but could not open his account as Taijul joined him in the dressing room when he was dismissed by Sonal Dinusha, who ended with three wickets.

Sri Lanka started their reply on a positive note with openers Nissanka and Lahiru Udara sharing an 80-plus run stand. Bangladesh began with a pace-and-spin combination, with Ebadot and Taijul operating in tandem. But Nissanka and Udara simply shrugged them off and kept finding the fence. Not even Rana’s express pace had the desired effect on the openers, as Udara flicked a pair of fours in his first over and was the beneficiary of an lbw appeal in Taijul’s over that was ruled in his favour after umpire’s call. Nissanka also struck two fours in a Rana over as the openers completed the half-century partnership in less than 9 overs. Bangladesh then operated spin from both ends and while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul bowled some tight overs before Lunch, Sri Lanka progressed to 83/0.

But the 88-run opening partnership was broken in the third over after the lunch break when Taijul had Udara leg-before, with Bangladesh needing the DRS route to get the decision in their favour. But their reprieve didn’t last long as Nissanka and Chandimal shared a giant stand to take the visitors’S sails out. Once Nissanka moved past fifty, Chandimal slogswept Taijul for a six and both batsmen operated in boundaries to push Sri Lanka along. Bangladesh, however, lost a review for an lbw appeal in Nayeem Hasan’s over and Sri Lanka reviewed one correctly in Taijul’s over, with Chandimal on the receiving end of the batter in both cases. He then raised his fifty as Sri Lanka went into the Tea interval at 190/1.

Pathum Nissanka got another hundred and was well backed by Dinesh Chandimal as the pair put Bangladesh on the mat with a 194-run stand on Day 2 of the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Sri Lanka consolidated their position at Stumps scoring 290/3, a lead of 43 runs, after bowling out Bangladesh for 247. Nissanka was not out on 146 while Chandimal fell in the last over of the day for 93.

DAY-3

Resuming on 146 overnight, Nissanka raced 50 runs to the hundred off the first ten balls of the day as the hosts moved beyond 300. It took nothing less than 2.1 overs with the second new ball, as the ball became wet, and the centurion was removed by Taijul Islam six balls later just as he drove one to short cover. The left-arm spinner got captain Dhananjaya de Silva in his next over as the visitors came back fighting in the game.

Sri Lanka were not disturbed from the other end as the Bangladesh pacers were wayward – something Kamindu Mendis capitalised with four boundaries in no time. But the first wicket of the series for Nahid Rana was that of nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya, who did his job to perfection, as the visitors chipped away. Kusal and Kamindu had a brief passage where they dealt in rapid boundaries as the hosts started to claw their way back into the game. But the 51-run partnership was ended when Nayeem Hasan bowled through Kamindu Mohammed’s defence for 33 on the stroke of Lunch.

The first ball after Lunch Sonal Dinusha successfully challenged a caught behind decision off the DRS but he couldn’t stay for much longer as Nayeem rattled his furniture. Kusal eased to 50 from just 60 balls, and Tharindu Rathanyake got off the mark with a six of his own by deep in his crease and playing a slog-sweep. The second fell soon after, caught on long-on, as the hosts lost their eighth wicket. Kusal then took it upon himself to change gears, slogging Nayeem over midwicket for a six and driving the offspinner back over his head for another six, and also slashing him over cover for a four through his two overs as the lead went past 200. It was also sandwiched by a boundary off Taijul but the keeper-batter’s rearguard counter-attack was cut short as he ran himself out on 84 in frustration. Taijul finished the innings with a five-fer, getting Asitha Fernando for a duck, the hosts closing on 456.

The Bangladesh openers were positive in the first couple of overs, cognizant of the tough job ahead of them. Shadman Islam and Anamul Haque hit two boundaries each in the first five overs and raced for La 20/0 and that led Tim van der Gugten’s men to the spin option as early as the sixth over. But Asitha was to hang on from the other end and claim the all important wicket of Anamul, off what turned out in the final analysis to be the last delivery of the second session.

Life got worse for Bangladesh after the break as Shadman edged one behind to the ‘keeper off the second ball of the session. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque then attempted to play the survival game and they got everything apart from one delivery which the Bangladesh skipper smashed into the stands. He attempted the same shot once more, but was lucky to survive a stumping appeal. The two southpaws also managed the odd boundary off Jayasuriya.

De Silva applied himself and clutched Mominul for his second wicket in that over, at the end of which he was given a chance to bowl, and then he took Najmul in his third. Bangladesh’s day went from bad to worse as Jayasuriya trapped Mushfiqur Rahim lbw before Mehidy Hasan Miraz was given out leg before on what proved to be the last ball of the day.

DAY-4

With a massive first innings lead of 211, Bangladesh crumbled for 133 in the second innings with Prabath Jayasuriya doing the damage again. The left-arm spinner claimed 5 for 56 to collect his sixth five-for in Test cricket. Three wickets were scalped on the very morning, none sterner than hole-up kind Litton Das who slashed to an edge outside.

Perret had won Sri Lanka sealed a comprehensive win over Bangladesh in the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club by an innings and 78 runs and won the two-match series 1-0. The hosts required only 33 balls on the fourth morning to claim the final four Bangladesh wickets and complete a comprehensive win.

Brief Scores:

Bangladesh 247 & 133 all out (Prabath Jayasuriya 5-56) lost to Sri Lanka 458 by an innings and 78 runs.
