SOUTH AFRICA-

Asked to bat first, South Africa were in some early trouble at 57/3 by the seventh over after Ryan Rickelton (14), Aiden Markram (18) and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (10) perished within twenty balls of each other. But what followed was a T20 batting masterclass from the 21-year-old Brevis as he delivered a breathtaking knock that pretty much turned the match in its head.

Tristan Stubbs(22 balls >31) was supporting Brevis very well and the pair added 126 runs for the fourth wicket in 57balls. South Africa’s recovery was rooted in the partnership, as Brevis brought out his full set of shots. That his strike rate of 223.21 matched the damage he’d done to one of the world’s best white-ball attacks was synecdochical [sic] of Finch’s night in his hometown.

He made the cheapest of them all, however he was at his destructive best against Glenn Maxwell which he launched for 6, 6, 4, 6 on his way to a half-century- making him just the third youngest South African commentator ever. He never looked back from thereon. He sprinted from 50 to 100 in just 16 balls, inside the fourteenth over, smashing the secondfastest T20I ton for South Africa and also the fastest against Australia. Despite the departure of Stubbs in the 17th over, thanks a scrumptious Adam Zampa delivery, then Brevis went into overdrive while holding up one end and was there till the end at last.

His innings helped South Africa post their highest T20I total against Australia, 218/7.

AUSTRALIA-

With a daunting task in front of him, Australia’s response was marred by stutter. The hosts lost Travis Head bowled for 5 in the second over by Aiden Markram, the latter than caught a flying Cameron Green (9) at midwicket through a stunning catch by Nqabayomzi Peter. While the catch seemed to have slipped out of Gill’s hands as he got up, the third umpire ruled he had the ball in control.

The recovery work began with a counter-attacking 48-run stand between Marsh and Tim David before the latter was caught behind off Bosch. David, nevertheless, retained the chase alive with a 23-ball fifty smashing four sixes and as many fours. However, he perished immediately after getting past the milestone when he drove and edged a Kagiso Rabada cutter to cover, taking some sting off the chase. Apart from a bit of subcontinental pitch hacking from some of the lower-order that managed a few starts – ending with Wes Agar also being stumped off Zondo – Australia’s chase became increasingly hectic, exacerbated by Bosch and Mphaka taking three wickets each to have the tourists struggling at 104 for fourth midway through the tenth over.

However, after a 17-run defeat in the series opener, South African truly rebounded with an emphatic triumph. The series now shifts to Cairns for third T201 on August 14.
