SOUTH AFRICA-

Electing to bat, South Africa were in familiar territory at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay – recovering on the back foot initially before an eventual late-order collapse jeopardized what seemed to be a strong total. Cummings took their last four wickets for 31 runs in 35 balls as they slumped from 233 for 5 at the start of the 41st over to 264 for 9 in the 46th before they were all out for 277.

MATTHEW BREETZKEMatthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs had led a middle-order fightback after Xavier Bartlett picked up two early wickets. The pair stitched together an 89-run partnership for the fourth wicket, coming on the back of a 67-run stand for the third one between Tony De Zorzi and Breetzke. These associations steered South Africa through the awkward middle phase of the game. Breetzke’s counter-attack on Aaron Hardie that at one stage went for 16 in an over helped tip the scales with a calm Stubbs at the other end.

But right when they seemed ready for bigger things, Breetzke misjudged a powerful shot from Nathan Ellis and was caught out after scoring 88. Ellis struck again in his following over with another short delivery that dismissed Dewald Brevis, putting South Africa back in trouble. Stubbs managed to push the team forward before he too fell victim to the late-innings breakdown.

AUSTRALIA-

LUNGI NGIDIDuring their batting chase, Australia endured yet another disappointing performance with the bat. Travis Head departed early in the third over after poorly timing a lofted shot against Nandre Burger. Things deteriorated further as Marnus Labuschagne’s dreadful streak in international matches persisted. Going after a wide delivery from Ngidi, Labuschagne was dismissed for just 1 run – his second consecutive single-digit score. Captain Mitchell Marsh escaped a dropped opportunity and managed four boundaries in his 18-run knock before falling to a poorly executed pull shot.

Cameron Green and Josh Inglis provided stability through their 67-run partnership for the fourth wicket until Green sent a return catch directly to Senuran Muthusamy, ending his innings at 35. Inglis stood as the sole fighter while the batting order crumbled quickly around him. Ngidi cleaned up the tail-end batsmen, delivering key dismissals of both Hardie and Inglis in back-to-back overs as Australia collapsed to 193 all out.

Brief Scores:

South Africa 277 all out (Matthew Breetzke 88, Tristan Stubbs 74; Adam Zampa 3-63) beat Australia 193 all out (Josh Inglis 87; Lungi Ngidi 5-42) by 84 runs.
