SRI LANKA-
It was not the kind of beginning Sri Lanka hoped for after they chose to bat, losing three wickets for 29 within eight overs. Nissanka in-form Pathum Nissanka for a duck as he tried to cut Shakib only to snick back to the ‘keeper. Nishan Madushka dragged on off Taskin Ahmed, who also accounted for Kamindu Mendis, who spooned a catch to mid-off for a duck. Kusal, meanwhile, was playing a positive hand at the other end, striking boundaries, which included two fours and a six off Tanzim in the sixth over. Asalanka made his presence felt with some cracking shots, which included a six over cover off Taskin and a slog-sweep for maximum off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, to take Sri Lanka to 50 at the end of the tenth over.
Kusal and Asalanka gave them a solid 60-run partnership that was ended in the 19th over when Kusal was trapped leg before wicket by debutant left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam five runs short of his half-century. Asalanka went on the offensive and brought up his half-century off 61 balls, with Janith Liyanage providing good support as the pair put on a fifty-run stand to steady the Sri Lankan innings. But Bangladesh struck back once more to break a threatening stand, Liyanage holed out to long-on off Najmul Hossain Shanto. In his next over, though, Shanto was smacked for a six by Asalanka and then a four off a free hit – a waist-high no-ball for a bouncer – by Milan Rathnayake. The new playing conditions were also enforced with Bangladesh needing to make a call on one of the two new balls after the 34th over.
The left-hander put on a handy 39-run stand with Asalanka before he was dismissed bowled by Tanzim for 22. Wanindu Hasaranga added a swift 22, three fours in it, before he, too, was dismissed by Taskin, who also removed Maheesh Theekshana, to reduce Sri Lanka to 228 for 8 in the 46th over even though Pathum Nissanka counterattacked. Asalanka then went on to raise his fifth ODI hundred as well but he fell in the final over as Tanzim got the third wicket to keep Sri Lanka under 250.
BANGLADESH-
The other debutant in Bangladesh XI, Parvez Hossain Emon, started positively too, alongside Tanzid Hasan, as the opening pair hit as many as six fours in the first five overs. One such slog went wrong for Emon, who was dismissed for 13 by Asitha Fernando. Tanzid then hit a four and a six off Rathnayake and Shanto two fours off Fernando. Both batted at a slow to moderate pace, Tanzid reaching a 51-ball fifty, as they put on over 70 for the first wicket before Bangladesh slumped.
It began with the run-out of Shanto, who went for a second off a push into the off side and fell short despite a dive. Hasaranga then took a brace of wickets in the 18th over to leave Bangladesh in even worse shape. It was captain Das this time who was out for a duck after Tanzid’s departure saw Liyanage producing a sensational catch as he flew to his right from mid-off, grabbing the ball with both hands to leave Bangladesh reeling. There was further toil as Towhid Hridoy was bowled by Kamindu, new captain Mehidy went lbw to Hasaranga. Ambidextrous bowler Kamindu then took the wickets of Tanzim and Taskin in the same over. Bangladesh, who had been trucking along nicely at 100 for 1, stumbled to 105 for 8 in losing seven wickets for five runs.
Tanvir smacked Kamindu for a four to a loose ball and Jaker also struck the same bowler for a boundary with the ninth-wicket pair helping themselves to 20 runs in nearly eight overs. Theekshana, however, broke the stand when he had Tanvir caught behind. Jaker then sixes off Asalanka and Theekshana, and a four and a six off Fernando to try and stage a comeback. He also did the right thing by milking the majority of the strike as Mustafizur gamely played second fiddle. Boundaries off Hasaranga and Theekshana helped Jaker to his fifty off 59 balls as he kept Bangladesh afloat.
And to add to their blushes, Sri Lanka were penalized five runs for starting an over behind time, for the third time, after twice being warned. But that did not matter a great deal in the end, as Hasaranga brought Jaker’s commendable knock to an end by pinning him in front to seal the match in the 36th over.
Brief scores:
Sri Lanka 244 in 49.2 overs (Charith Asalanka 106, Kusal Mendis 45; Taskin Ahmed 4-47, Tanzim Hasan Sakib 3-46) beat Bangladesh 167 in 35.5 overs (Tanzid Hasan 62, Jaker Ali 51; Wanindu Hasaranga 4-10, Kamindu Mendis 3-19) by 77 runs.
